Bryce Harper doesn’t feel ejection was necessary: ‘He kinda just was like, ‘Eh”

DENVER — Bryce Harper, in his telling, was just trying to have a conversation. The next thing he knew, his night was over. Through the eyes of the two-time MVP, that’s how Harper’s interaction with home plate umpire Brian Walsh in the first inning, which ended in his second straight Coors Field ejection, went on Friday night. Harper took exception to an 0-1 Ty Blach sinker that seemed like a 50-50 call right around the low and inside corner of the strike zone. He and Walsh went back and forth

Managers, former teammate react to Mike Trout injury news: ‘It stinks’

ANAHEIM — No one raised an eyebrow at Mike Trout during the Angels’ 6-5 win over the Phillies on Monday night. There was no reason to. Trout went to the plate all four times the leadoff spot came up for Los Angeles. Manned center field all nine innings. Stole a bag. Scored from second on a wild pitch. The biggest abnormality for the future Hall of Famer was the zero in the hit column.

Phillies’ early lead slips in ugly fashion, late rally squandered in opener loss to Angels

ANAHEIM — It was too good a script. The Phillies had two men in scoring position with one out in the ninth, a single away from tying it. First chance: Alec Bohm, the NL Player of the Week who’s built the best start to a season of his career largely on the strength of hitting with runners in scoring position. Second chance: Brandon Marsh, returning to Anaheim for the first time as a visitor since he was traded to the Phillies in 2022. But whether the Angels play in Anaheim or Los Angeles, it certainly isn't Hollywood. The drama, accordingly, ended there.

Connor Brogdon excited for ‘second top moment in my baseball career’

SAN FRANCISCO — Connor Brogdon’s favorite thing he’s done in his baseball career is somewhat easy to guess: pitching in the World Series last fall. His second favorite will take place on Monday night. Brogdon will be the Phillies’ opener in the series opener against the San Francisco Giants. It won’t be the first start of his career, but it’ll be the most special: He’ll make it at Oracle Park, where Brogdon regularly attended games while growing up in Clovis, Calif. “I think it’s probably the

Phillies Notes: Nick Castellanos to the injured list

This week’s lineup of opposing pitchers isn’t exactly kind to the Philadelphia Phillies. Salvaging Sunday’s series finale against the San Francisco Giants will require them to defeat Carlos Rodón, who figures to get some votes toward the top of the 2022 National League Cy Young ballot. Sandy Alcántara, who very well might win that award, comes to town on Thursday. Jesús Luzardo, Miami’s starter this Tuesday, is no slouch.
